Going Beyond

While the AVID Program began at Santa Barbara High School in 2006, it wasn't until the class of 2012 that we began to see the results of our slow growth model.  That class was the first class to take an overnight field trip to the Bay Area to visit colleges and universities and many of them applied and were accepted to schools such as Sacramento State University.   Since then we have had students attend or are attending the following colleges and universities:

UC Berkeley

UC Santa Barbara

UCLA

UC Irvine

UC Riverside

UC Davis

UC Santa Cruz

UC Merced

San Francisco State

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Cal State Northridge

San Diego State

Sacramento State

Sonoma State

Cal State San Marcos

Cal State Dominguez Hills

Cal State Channel Islands

Cal State East Bay

Fresno State

San Jose State

Chico State

University of San Diego

University of San Francisco

Mount St. Mary's College

University of Southern California

Westmont College

University of Oregon

School Application

MAYRA GUEVARA
UC IRVINE
CLASS OF 2021

Mayra was very active at SBHS all four years.  A member of the women's soccer program, Mayra embodied the spirit of a true student-athlete.  She also was an instrumental part of the AVID Club helping to fundraise for two overnight field trips and also volunteering at her church as a youth mentor.  Her tenacity, infectious smile, and willingness to help her peers made her popular in and out of the classroom.  Mayra did all this while maintaining a 4.00 academic GPA.  It was no surprise that she was selected as a Distinguished Don and received multiple scholarships to study at UC Irvine.

Adult Students

LEONEL OLIVO FUENTES
UC SANTA BARBARA
CLASS OF 2021

Leonel or Leo to his friends was a quiet but dedicated student who brought the determination and work ethic to his classes every day.  As a peer, Leo stepped up to tutor his classmates in math and even science while maintaining a 4.60 GPA taking the most rigorous class schedule.  He did this while working two jobs after school and the weekends to help his family.  He never shirked from his academic responsibilities and we were thrilled when he was selected as a Distinguished Don and offered a spot at our local university, UC Santa Barbara where he plans to major in physics.

LUZ NICACIO
SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY
CLASS OF 2021

Luz was so quiet her first year in AVID, we were not sure that she even spoke.  Shy and reserved at first, Luz became a leader in the AVID program through the AVID Club and other extracurricular activities including AHA! Peacebuilders.  Her Senior year she blossomed into a leader by helping mentor younger students and as the AVID TA where she worked on various documents to help make the AVID program stronger.  She is currently attending San Jose State University and majoring in Education to pursue her dream of being a special education teacher.
